Background:

Government consults on ending live animal exports for slaughter

Environment Secretary George Eustice announces plans to ban the export of live animals for slaughter and fattening. The proposals form part of an eight-week consultation, launched today (Thursday 3 December) in England and Wales, seeking views on how to better protect animal welfare during transport including:

  • Reduced maximum journey times
  • Animals being given more space and headroom during transport
  • Stricter rules on transporting animals in extreme temperatures
  • Tighter rules for transporting live animals by sea.

More information is available on the intranet and see GOV.UK to access the consultation and to read the press release
